Home may be where the heart is but when it comes to business websites, you need information, not sentiment.
People click links because they want to know more about the site or subject of the link. Every link will give you the address of the website, and it should also tell you the name and main subject of the page you’re visiting. But what if it doesn’t? There are an amazing number of entrepreneurs who share a link that simply says “home” or some other generic label. No title, no subject, no picture, no clue what you’ll find if you click the link.
This is not a good look. And your site won’t get listed in search engines that way either.
When you share your website on social media sites, there is usually a preview along with the link. You’ve seen it. It’s the picture, page title, and page description that shows up when you type in the link. Just as importantly, the title and description are also what appear in the search engine results when your site shows for a particular search query.
So it makes sense for you to pay attention to this. It’s usually a simple matter to see that your preview says something good about your website. “Home” is definitely not what you want it to say, especially when there’s no accompanying description and/or image. But you might be surprised how often it happens that way.
This is usually the result of one or two specific issues. Maybe you used a “free” website builder or service, Or, you hired a designer that knows very little about keywords, marketing, SEO and best practices for successful websites. The problem is simple to solve either way. Simply fill in your title and description tags before making your site public. The location of this info differs according to the program you’re using but it’s always a good idea to find and make use of it. Start by going to the dashboard or admin panel and look for meta data. Or if you have an SEO plugin, the labels will be right there, waiting for you to fill them in.
